As of today—April 20, natch—recreational marijuana is legal in 9 states plus the District of Columbia. That gives everyone who doesn’t live in those states a whole new reason to travel. And it’s birthing a new wing of the travel industry, too—one that’s spread roots through everything from food to hotels to souvenir shops. As you’ll hear, we’re not entirely sure what to call it—weed travel? Pot tourism? Journeys into cannabis?—but on this week’s podcast we take a long, deep hit of this nascent phenomenon. How are states talking about it? Which are doing it well? How are conventional travel players integrating it into their businesses—by which we mean when, and where, will we find edibles in the minibar?
We also take a minute to consider how this transformation might impact the existing weed economy and those who’ve been part of it for decades, and who have, in many cases—especially in communities of color—been disproportionately penalized for their role in what now looks like paving the way.
There’s no doubt that weed, now that it’s legit, will be big. But how will Big Weed change travel?
Many thanks to Verena von Pfetten, Co-founder of Gossamer—whose brand-new, beautiful magazine hits newsstands today—and to Cara Parks, Executive Editor at Roads & Kingdoms, for passing us their expertise on the subject. And to our host, Brad Rickman, who managed to keep the conversation from wandering too far afield. As always, a special shoutout to our engineer Brett Fuchs for making it all sound swell.
