(KNSI) – If you’re looking to book holiday travel, there’s no time like the present.
Triple A’s Michelle Donati says now is the time to buy your tickets.
“Through October 25th, if you book for Christmas holiday travel, you can actually save a considerable amount of money. But if you booked several months ago, so say in the summer, you’ll probably have paid more for a ticket than if you would have if you had waited.”
The “sweet spot” for getting the best December airfare is two to three months before Christmas. Donatti says if you’re looking for cheap airfare for a Thanksgiving trip, that ship has sailed, but you maybe aren’t totally out of luck.
“We are unfortunately past that for thanksgiving, but with that being said we did find according to our data, that there are some deals still to be had, especially for those who wait until the last minute for those procrastinators.”
Thanksgiving week, the cheapest day to travel she says is Monday, November 19th, while flights on the Tuesday and Wednesday of that week will be the priciest. For Christmas, fares will be higher for flights on December 22nd or 23rd. But she says Christmas Eve is a cheaper, and quieter day to fly.
“If you have that flexibility, you can save some money and also avoid some of the travel stress that comes with being at the airport the time of year where everyone else is at the airport.”
Officials with Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport say one of the busiest travel days there is Thanksgiving eve.
