St Helena Tourism has confirmed that a second-weekly flight to the south Atlantic island, operating through the peak summer season, will operate from Cape Town.

The development opens up the opportunity for additional twin centre breaks combining South Africa’s most famous city with the fascinating British Overseas Territory, one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world.

The new flights will operate every Tuesday from December this year until March 2020, running in parallel with the weekly flight that operates between St Helena and Johannesburg on Saturdays throughout the year.

All flights are operated by SA Airlink.

Until autumn 2017, the only way to reach St Helena was via a five-day journey by Royal Mail Ship from Cape Town, but the launch of commercial flights following the opening of the island’s first airport cut journey times to a six-hour flight from Johannesburg.

This new flight route restores the historic link with Cape Town, but in a fraction of the time.

Travellers to Cape Town taking advantage of this new flight route will discover a fascinating destination shaped by its isolation.

Boasting beautiful natural scenery and biodiversity, particularly marine wildlife, visitors will find a haven of peace and calmness virtually impossible to find in today’s fast-paced world.
